Computers are useless

When I went back to school to get my computer science degree I took a Database class. We did a project where the final result was stating what we thought would be more successful in terms of booksales, actual Barnes and Noble bookstores, or amazon.com. (Looking back, I have no idea what this had to do with learning Database.) It was when Amazon first came out and everyone was an internet millionare and everyone was sucking amazon.com's hypothetical cock. I was the only person in the class who thought the actual bookstores would continue to exist. Everyone else in the class predicted Barnes and Noble would be out of business in 3 years. They also predicted amazon would invent teleportation and GM would go out of business by now too.

Well, I have no idea who was right. I think there's still Barnes and Nobles, but I can't say I've been to one in a long time. I do know there are still real life bookstores and the internet is for nerds. Everyone was so excited about the quote/unquote "Internet" back then, and everyone thought quote/unquote "Computers" were the future.

And we all know everyone was wrong about computers. Computers can't solve everything. Computers suck when it comes to trying to draw a turkey from the outline of your hand.

happy thanksgiving to all you Americans. To all you Canadians and English people, Shalom or whatever.

Amazon has only delivered one book out of about four ordered last year. I heart Waterstones.

heehee - Shalom from a Canadian living in England

anyway - been reading your blog for some time now, but I had to comment that your turkey looks really similar to one of my student's drawings of his hand (he's 6) so at least we can say computers are as artistically inclined as 6 year olds...

cheers & happy thanksgiving :)

mk - thanks! (you mean ill as in cool ill, right?)

ss - I wish I had some construction paper at home. I'd def. make one tonight.

fm - Isn't it so much better to actually be at a bookstore?? F Amazon!

lulu - you'll have to trace a wheelchair out of your elbow or something.

melinda - I have total respect for people like you... people that teach... people that teach 6 year olds who have mutant hands especially.

Happy Thanksgiving from this American to you!

Best wishes for your turkey's recovery.

Tim:
That is a disabled-looking turkey. But a turkey made with LOVE!

True story: I friend of mine knew Jeff Besos when he started Amazon. He asked my friend to invest. That was back when Jeff Besos thought he'd only be selling software online, not books. My friend said, "You're crazy. That will never work." My friend is still working construction.

Why doesn't that turkey have a neck? OMG, was it the weakling of the bunch who was teased and mocked by the other turkeys because he didn't have a neck and he couldn't "Gobble" correctly so while the other little turkeys had cute names like Giblet and Goober, he was called Gimpy? Poor little no-neck turkey. I hope he's the one that President Bush pardons this year.
Oh yeah, and Barnes and Noble's online Sale Annex is the best thing ever!

Yourr turkey theory has just blown the whole concept of quote/unquote "computers" wide open.

It's the new Y2K. ;)

Your turkey does look sick, but happy thanksgiving right back at ya. We don't celebrate it in Britain, but I love it because any time anyone asks me about work I should have done, I just say 'oh, I'm waiting on those figures from the US office - but you know, everyone has gone away for Thanksgiving over there.' Then I shrug.

man i remember being a kid and so stoked that my parents would let me go online for an hour to chat with my iternet friends. we'd make pictures with KidPix or something like that and email them to each other.
