Motivation

At my Christmas lunch three of my coworkers and I made a pact to get in shape and run four races together this year. A 5 miler in April, The Broad Street Run (10 miles) in May, a half marathon in September, and a 10 mile trail run (which involves running through a calf-deep creek 3 times) at the park next to my house in October.

We were all drinking so I assumed it was all talk. As it turns out, it looks like everyone was serious. So, I had to get serious too. I printed out a traning schedule last week and I ran 5 miles at lunch today (to total 18 miles in the past 8 days). I have no point to this post other than to just write it because when I actually tell people I'm going to do something I force myself to do them. Like that time I walked across the country. on my hands.

Look at you, being all Forest Gump!

I'd hire a stunt double if I were you. Someone with some skills, like a Rocky type from South Philly. Perhaps they'd never know it wasn't you, and you could stay at home drinking beer and eating wings. Wing Bowl...now that's something to train for.

I can't run. I've tried. It hurts my knees. I jump rope in my basement. I feel like a big black boxer and a eight year old girl with pigtails all at the same time.

Good for you! I'd like to do something like that. No one I know is interested so it's hard to get started.

Wow! That's pretty far. I'm lucky if I walk a mile a week. Scratch that.... a mile a month. Unless I happen to go this really big mall by my house one weekend. Then maybe a mile that weekend.
Hey, I do 60 crunches on a medicine ball every other day. That's got to count for something.

mel - uggh, I hate that movie.

chuck - I feel like rocky when I run outside. When I ran Saturday the wind chill was 8, so I was all bundled up like him.

tf - jumping rope is awesome exercise.

ogo - yeah, I hear that. Getting started is the hardest part.

xxxxx - I hate crunches! I'd rather run 2 miles than do 60 crunches.

Wow, just reading this post about exercise made me tired. Now where did I put that glazed doughnut?

Is everyone in the Philly area required to run to the Rocky music?

I hate running. There better be a damn good reason if I'm running—like away from a robber or towards a hot fudge sundae. Otherwise? I'll walk.

I feel your pain. I'm doing a small triathlon this summer and I'm in the pool and on the stationary bike, but I probably won't start running until a week before the event. Don't commit to anything while you're drinking. Last time I did that I planned a trip to Mexico.

There's some guys who do the Boston marathon by stopping every mile at a a different bar/pub. Maybe you can start a deal like that.
