I've seen on other people's blogs that they can see how people reached thier sites. How? Am I missing something? Or is this a feature of haloscan or something?

I use Statcounter, a free service. www.statcounter.com

Yeah, Statcounter works pretty well. And you also can then have a counter so that the whole world can see that a 34 people have visisted your site ever. And most of them are probably you.

well, I have a stat counter on my page, and it's a piece of crap and this one looks 100 times better. But, what I've read on other people's sites is things like "3 people reached my site this month by searching google for 'guy with no sense of humor'" and whatnot. I'll be switching to the counter mentioned, but I was wondering how people know what search strings people typed in to reach thier site.

One of statcounter's services is a keyword analysis. If someone does a click-through on your blog from a search, it will tell you the search string, the search engine, etc. I think it only tells you this stuff when someone clicks the link, though. Check with Maine or Ev @ quietwaterweb.com - Ev does posts about search strings and may be able to help out more.
